How to choose your wedding date (and fall in love with it)

The most popular months to say "I do," the prettiest number dates for 2027 and 2028, and a gentle way to choose the day that's truly yours.

By Kristina · October 19, 2026

Here's a question I hear all the time: what's the most popular month to say "I do"?

In Canada, the answer is summer sliding into early fall. June has always been the classic, but August, September and early October are now just as busy, and in many places September is the month everyone wants. The days are still warm, the evenings are cool, and in so much of this country the leaves are just starting to turn. It's not hard to see why.

But the most popular month isn't always the right month for you. Your date shapes almost everything: the weather, the light in your photos, which venues and vendors you can book, what you spend and who can be there. So grab a coffee (or a glass of wine), sit down together, and let's find yours.

01

Start with your people

Before you look at a calendar, write down the handful of people you can't imagine getting married without. Your parents. A grandparent. A sibling who lives overseas. The friend who's expecting a baby next spring.

Then think about what makes their lives easier or harder. A grandparent who shouldn't travel in winter. A brother who works every summer weekend. A best friend abroad who needs months of notice to book flights.

It's the step most couples skip, and it's the one that saves the most heartache. Ruling out a month now is so much easier than finding out after you've paid a deposit.

02

Pick your season

In Canada, the season changes your wedding more than almost anything else, so it's worth choosing on purpose.

Summer (June to August) gives you long golden evenings and outdoor everything. It's also the busiest time of year, so the most loved venues and photographers can book up well over a year ahead.

Fall (September and October) is pure magic here: warm afternoons, crisp nights and colour you can't buy. It's nearly as busy as summer, so treat it the same way. If fall is calling you, our fall wedding ideas are full of inspiration.

Winter (November to March) is cozy, candlelit and often far better value. Think twinkle lights, snowy portraits and a warm room full of the people you love. There's usually more choice, too. Our winter wedding guide has lots of ideas.

Spring (April and May) is fresh and romantic, but it's the least predictable season of all. Fall in love with a venue that has a beautiful indoor plan B.

03

Fall for a special number date

Some couples want a date that's a little bit poetic. A date that's easy to remember, looks beautiful on a save-the-date, and makes your guests smile. Here are some of my favourites coming up:

2026

Saturday, December 12, 2026 (12.12.26): a cozy holiday wedding with a date that repeats itself.

Saturday, December 26, 2026 (12.26.26): Boxing Day, when everyone's already home for the holidays.

2027

Saturday, February 27, 2027 (2.27.27): a sweet winter Saturday, just after Valentine's.

Sunday, February 14, 2027: Valentine's Day itself, on a Sunday.

Saturday, March 27, 2027 (3.27.27): early spring with a pretty little pattern.

Sunday, June 27, 2027 (6.27.27): a summer Sunday, perfect for a relaxed long lunch.

Wednesday, July 7, 2027 (7.7.27): lucky sevens, made for a small, intimate midweek wedding.

Saturday, July 17, 2027 (7.17.27): a summer Saturday that's easy to remember.

Tuesday, July 27, 2027 (7.27.27): the one that reads the same everywhere you look.

Friday, August 27, 2027 (8.27.27): a late summer Friday, often kinder on the budget.

2028

Tuesday, February 29, 2028: a leap day wedding. Your anniversary only comes round every four years, which is either very romantic or a great excuse for a party.

Tuesday, August 8, 2028 (8.8.28): a lucky eight, and a beautiful summer midweek date.

Saturday, October 28, 2028 (10.28.28): a fall Saturday with a lovely rhythm to it.

A little tip from me: number dates are popular, and the Saturdays go first. If one of these makes your heart skip, check who's free on that date sooner rather than later.

04

Think about the day of the week

Saturdays are the most requested day of the year, and prices often reflect that. If your dream venue is booked on your Saturday, or the cost feels out of reach, look at the Friday or Sunday of the same weekend.

Many venues and vendors offer lower rates on those days, and your guests still get their weekend. A Sunday on a long weekend can feel exactly like a Saturday, because nobody's rushing off to work the next morning. We wrote a whole piece on Friday and Sunday weddings if you'd like to dig in.

05

Check long weekends and holidays

Long weekends are a lovely gift for your guests: an extra day to travel, celebrate and recover. They can also mean pricier hotels and flights, and some guests may already have plans.

Before you settle, look at the year and note Victoria Day, Canada Day, the August civic holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving. In Quebec, add the Fête nationale on June 24. Then decide together whether you want to use them or avoid them.

06

Let your budget have a say

Winter wedding in Canada

Your date is one of the kindest places to save money, because nobody notices. An off-peak month, a Friday or Sunday, or a quieter season can bring prices down and leave room for what matters most to you, whether that's the photographer, the flowers or the band.

If you haven't set a budget yet, start there. Our wedding budget basics walk you through it, and OpenDates Ever After builds a budget around real local prices, for free.

07

Choose two or three dates, not one

Unless one date truly matters (an anniversary, a family birthday, a number you love), go into planning with two or three dates you'd be genuinely happy with, in order.

That little bit of flexibility is worth so much. The venue you fall for might have your second choice open, or a beautiful Friday the week before. Couples with a short list almost always end up with more options and a better price.

08

See who's free before you fall in love

You know the feeling. You find the perfect venue, you picture the whole day there, you send the message... and your date was booked months ago. Then it happens again with the photographer.

That's exactly why we built OpenDates. Pick your date, or even just your month, and see the venues, photographers, florists, DJs and bands, hair and makeup artists, planners and every other kind of wedding vendor who's open that day, right across Canada. It's completely free for couples, and everything you look at after that is a real option.

Then make it official

Once your date works for your people, your season, your budget and your venue, book it. Sign with your venue first, because the venue usually decides the date. Then book the people who can only be in one place at a time: your photographer, your planner and your DJ or band. Our guide on when to book wedding vendors has a simple timeline.

And then, the fun part. Tell everyone! A save-the-date six to twelve months out is perfect, or a little earlier if guests are flying in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular month to get married in Canada?

Summer and early fall are the busiest. June is the classic, but August, September and early October are just as popular, and September is a favourite in many parts of the country.

What are some special wedding dates in 2027?

Some lovely ones are Saturday, February 27 (2.27.27), Saturday, March 27 (3.27.27), Wednesday, July 7 (7.7.27), Saturday, July 17 (7.17.27) and Tuesday, July 27 (7.27.27). The Saturdays tend to book first.

How far in advance should we choose our wedding date?

Most couples choose their date 12 to 18 months ahead. For a summer or fall Saturday at a popular venue, earlier is safer. For a winter, Friday or Sunday wedding, you can often book much closer to the day.

Are Friday and Sunday weddings cheaper?

Often, yes. Many venues and vendors charge less on Fridays and Sundays than on Saturdays. It varies, so always ask.

Should we pick the date or the venue first?

Usually you pick a season and a short list of dates, then find a venue that has one of them open. Searching by your date first means you only look at venues that can actually say yes.
