Fall wedding ideas for Canadian couples

Autumn here gives you colour, comfort food and cooler air, and here is how to make the most of all three.

There is a reason so many couples choose the fall. The light goes soft, the leaves turn, and the whole country seems to slow down for a few weeks. If you are hunting for fall wedding ideas that actually suit our weather, you are in the right place.

My mom Debi and I have watched a lot of weddings come together, and the autumn ones have a particular feeling to them. Warm food, warm light, guests wrapped in blankets and in no hurry to leave.

So whether you are planning an autumn wedding in Victoria, St. John's or anywhere in between, here are the ideas that work with the season instead of against it.

01

Pick your weekend with the leaves in mind

Peak colour moves across the country at different times. In much of Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes, the first two weeks of October are usually the showiest. Further north, it can be late September. On the west coast, the big colour often holds into late October, and the rain tends to come with it.

If the leaves matter to you for photos, ask your venue when their property usually peaks. They watch it every single year and they will know. It is also worth asking what kind of trees they have, because maples, birches and evergreens give you three completely different backdrops.

One thing to keep in mind: fall is a busy season, so fall wedding venues go early. More on that at the end.

02

Dress for the weather you will actually get

A September afternoon in Kelowna and a late October evening in Winnipeg are two very different events. Plan for the cold snap, not the forecast you are hoping for.

A few things that work:

  • ✦Wraps, faux fur stoles or a good wool coat for anyone in the wedding party. Photos in coats on a grey day can be gorgeous. Your dress and attire shop can help you find something that suits the look.
  • ✦Blankets in a basket at the ceremony. Guests remember being warm far longer than they remember the chair covers.
  • ✦Patio heaters or a fire pit if your reception spills outdoors. A decor and rentals company can sort this out for you.
  • ✦Flat or block heels if you are walking on grass or gravel. Autumn ground is soft.
  • ✦A backup indoor ceremony spot, confirmed in writing. Fall rain in Canada is not a maybe.
03

Lean into fall wedding colours, but gently

Fall wedding ideas

Burnt orange and deep red are the obvious fall wedding colours, and they can be beautiful. They can also tip into looking like a harvest display if you go too hard with them.

Softer routes that still feel like autumn: dusty plum with cream, sage and camel, rust with ivory and a little gold, or deep forest green with warm neutrals. Let the leaves outside do the loud part.

For flowers, ask your florist what is actually in season and local when your date lands. Dahlias, chrysanthemums, amaranth, seeded eucalyptus and dried grasses all hold up well in cool weather, and seasonal stems usually stretch your budget further than imported ones.

04

Feed people like it is autumn

This is the season where comfort food just makes sense. Squash soup shooters passed at cocktails, roasted root vegetables, braised meats, a harvest salad with apples and toasted nuts.

Late night is where you can have real fun. Poutine bars, grilled cheese, apple cider doughnuts, butter tarts, tourtière in Quebec, a hot chocolate station with a few toppings. If you are in apple country in Ontario, Quebec or Nova Scotia, a local cider or an apple pie table beats a tiered cake for a lot of couples. Talk it through with your caterer early, because the good seasonal ideas usually need a bit of planning.

And warm drinks on arrival are a small touch guests always mention afterward. Spiced cider, mulled wine or just good coffee in the cold does more for the mood than another signature cocktail.

05

Work with the early sunset

This is the part couples forget. By mid October in most of the country, the sun is down not long after dinner starts, and daylight saving time ends at the beginning of November.

Ask your photographer for the golden hour time on your date and build the timeline around it, rather than the other way around. Lots of couples move the ceremony earlier in the afternoon so portraits happen in that warm light instead of in the dark.

Then plan for the darkness, because the darkness is an opportunity. String lights, candles in hurricane glass, lanterns along a path, uplighting on stone or brick. An evening fall reception can look far more atmospheric than a summer one ever will.

06

Little touches that fit the season

  • ✦Favours people will actually use: local honey, maple syrup, a small bag of coffee from a roaster in your town.
  • ✦A cozy corner with throws and lamps for guests who want to sit and talk.
  • ✦Seasonal stationery in deep tones with a little gold detail.
  • ✦A sparkler or lantern send off, which reads beautifully against an early dark sky.
  • ✦Sturdy signage. Autumn wind will take down anything light.
07

Let the season set the tone

The best fall weddings we hear about are not the ones with the most pumpkins. They are the ones where the couple let the season do the work: warm food, warm light, warm guests, and a date chosen with a bit of thought.

Start with the date, see who is free, and build everything else from there.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a fall wedding in Canada?

It depends where you are. In much of Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes, the first two weeks of October are usually the showiest for leaf colour. Further north it can be late September, and on the west coast the big colour often holds into late October along with the rain.

Is October a good month for a wedding?

An October wedding gives you some of the prettiest light and scenery of the year, and comfort food menus that guests love. Just remember the sun sets early, so build your timeline around golden hour and have a confirmed indoor backup.

How do I keep guests warm at an autumn wedding?

Blankets in a basket at the ceremony, patio heaters or a fire pit for any outdoor space, and warm drinks on arrival. These small things matter more to your guests than almost anything else on the day.

Are fall wedding venues harder to book?

Fall is a busy season in Canada, so popular dates tend to go early. The quickest way to see what is still open is to search by your exact date rather than emailing venues one at a time.

See who is free on your fall date

This is exactly why we built OpenDates. When I was planning my own wedding, the hardest part was finding out who was actually free on our date. On OpenDates, you type in your date and see the venues, photographers, caterers, DJs and musicians, planners and everyone else near you who still has that day open.

No chasing, no waiting a week for a reply. It is completely free for couples, in every province and territory.
