Why a Friday wedding can save you money (and a Sunday one too)

Moving your date by a single day can free up real money in your budget, and often opens doors to venues and vendors you thought were out of reach.

Saturday is the default. Most couples picture a Saturday without ever really choosing it, and that is exactly why Saturdays cost the most and get snapped up first. If you have any flexibility at all, a Friday wedding or a Sunday wedding can change your whole budget, and sometimes your whole shortlist of venues.

When I was planning my own wedding, the hardest part was simply finding out who was free. My mom Debi and I have watched a lot of weddings come together since then, and the couples who looked at more than one day in the calendar almost always had more choice.

Here is what actually shifts when you move your date by a day.

01

Venues often price Saturdays higher

Friday wedding

Many Canadian venues work on tiered pricing: a Saturday rate, and a lower rate for Fridays, Sundays and weekdays. The space is the same. The staff are the same. The only difference is demand.

Some venues drop their minimum spend instead of their rental fee. If a Saturday asks for a food and drink minimum you cannot comfortably hit with your guest count, a Friday or Sunday minimum might be far more realistic. That alone can save you from inviting people just to reach a number.

So ask every venue on your list the same question: what changes if we book a Friday or a Sunday instead? Ask about the rental fee, the minimum spend, the hours included, and whether the rate changes by season too. Some venues are quiet in one season and busy in another. It is one of the simplest ways to save money on a wedding venue without giving up anything you actually care about.

02

More of your favourite vendors are actually free

This is the part couples underestimate. The photographer you loved, the band you had your heart set on, the florist whose work you keep coming back to: on a Saturday in peak season, there is a good chance they are already booked. On a Friday or a Sunday, often they are not.

Availability is leverage. When a vendor has an open date they would love to fill, you are a welcome booking rather than one of several enquiries for the same day. You will hear back faster. You may get more flexibility on packages, hours or travel.

03

Peak season becomes possible again

Friday wedding

Summer and early fall are the busiest wedding months in most of Canada. If you want a September Saturday in Ontario or a July Saturday in BC, you are competing with a lot of other couples, often more than a year out.

Shift to the Friday or the Sunday in that same month and the pressure drops right off. You keep the weather and those long golden evenings. You lose the bidding war. For couples who want a particular season rather than a particular day, this is the easiest win in wedding planning, and it is a much gentler option than moving to true off-peak wedding dates in the middle of winter.

04

Where the savings add up

The venue is the obvious one, but the knock-on effects are worth listing:

  • ✦Accommodation. Hotel rates in tourist towns are often lower on Sunday nights than Saturday. Worth checking if you are booking a block for guests.
  • ✦Rentals and decor. Some rental companies price by the weekend anyway, but delivery windows are less crowded, which can mean fewer rush fees.
  • ✦Transport. Shuttle and car hire availability is better, and you are less likely to be squeezed into a tight window between other jobs.
  • ✦Your own stress. Fewer weddings happening that day means less competition for hair and makeup artists, less traffic around popular venues, and more attention from everyone you hired.

The honest trade-offs

A Friday or Sunday is not free money. There are real downsides, and you should weigh them properly.

Guests may need to take time off. A Friday wedding usually means a day off work for most people, and a Sunday means a Monday morning after. Out of town guests are affected either way, since they were travelling for the weekend regardless. Local guests feel it more.

Start times shift. Friday weddings often start later to let people finish work, which compresses the evening. Sunday weddings often start earlier so guests can get home. Either way, build your timeline around the real day, not a Saturday template.

Attendance can dip. Expect a few more regrets than you would on a Saturday. For some couples that is a problem. For others it quietly solves the guest list.

Long weekends change everything. A Sunday before a statutory holiday behaves like a Saturday, for guests and for pricing. Check the calendar before you assume you are getting a discount.

06

How to decide

Pick the month and the venue style you want first. Then look at three dates: a Saturday, the Friday before, and the Sunday after. Price all three with your top venue. Search all three to see which vendors come up free. Then look at your guest list and be honest about who genuinely could not come on a Friday.

Nine times out of ten, the answer is obvious once it is written down side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Friday wedding really cheaper than a Saturday?

Often yes, because many venues charge a lower rate or set a lower minimum spend on Fridays. It is not automatic though, so ask each venue directly what changes between the two days.

Will guests actually come to a Sunday wedding?

Most will, especially out of town guests who were travelling for the weekend anyway. Local guests with a Monday morning ahead are the ones most likely to send regrets, so give them plenty of notice and consider an earlier start.

What about a weekday wedding?

A weekday wedding usually brings the biggest savings and the widest vendor availability, and it suits smaller guest lists beautifully. The trade-off is that more guests will need to book time off, so it works best when your list is close family and friends.

When are off-peak wedding dates in Canada?

Broadly, late fall through early spring is quieter in most provinces, with summer and early fall the busiest. A Friday or Sunday in peak season is a nice middle ground if you want the weather without the competition.

See who is free before you choose your date

This is exactly why we built OpenDates. You enter your wedding date and see the venues, photographers, DJs and musicians, caterers and planners near you who are actually available, instead of emailing twenty businesses and waiting to hear back.

If you are torn between a Saturday and the Friday before, search both dates and compare what comes back. Sometimes that comparison makes the decision for you. It is completely free for couples, always.
