Yes, you can plan a wedding in three months or less in Canada. The trick is to flip the usual order: instead of choosing a date and hoping everyone is free, start with who is already open and build your day around them. When I checked OpenDates in late October 2026, Canadian venues and vendors had listed more than 6,200 open dates in the next three months, with nearly as many on Fridays and on Sundays as on Saturdays. The legal side can move quickly too. Alberta and British Columbia have no waiting period, Manitoba needs 24 hours, and Ontario's online route needs one business day. Québec is the one to plan around, with a 20 day public notice.
My mom Debi and I love a wedding that comes together quickly, and there are so many lovely reasons to want one soon. Here's how to do it without losing sleep.
Start with what's open, not with a date
The usual planning advice says pick your date, then book everyone. On a short timeline that means a lot of emails that end in "sorry, we're booked."
Turn it around. Decide roughly when (a month, or a few weekends that work), then look for the venue, officiant and photographer who are free in that window. Your date is whichever day the most important pieces line up.
Where open dates come from
Wedding calendars often aren't as full as they look from the outside. Couples postpone, plans change, and some months are simply quieter. When a date frees up, a business has a gap it would love to fill.
On OpenDates, the open dates are listed by the venues and vendors themselves, so when a date frees up, the business can add it for couples to find. In late October 2026, venues alone had more than 550 open dates in the next three months, and officiants had more than 950.
Say yes to a Friday or a Sunday

This is the single easiest way to give yourself choice. In the next three months on OpenDates (as of late October 2026), there were:
- ✦about 1,280 open dates on Saturdays
- ✦about 1,210 open dates on Fridays
- ✦about 1,210 open dates on Sundays
Fridays and Sundays each had nearly as many open dates as Saturdays, so if any of the three works for you, you have roughly three times the choice of a Saturday-only search. A Sunday afternoon or a Friday evening can feel every bit as special, and the people who love you will be there either way.
How to search open dates on OpenDates
- Open Find a date (the button at the end of this guide takes you there) and tap your date on the calendar, or choose "In the next 90 days" if you're flexible.
- Type your town or postal code, or choose a province.
- Pick a category. Start with venues, then officiants, photographers and catering.
- Message the businesses that fit, with your date, guest count and budget in the first line.
If you'd rather browse by area, there are pages showing who has open dates in the next three months, such as Ontario and British Columbia, with Alberta, Québec, Toronto, the GTA and Calgary listed too.
Licence timing, province by province
Good news: in most provinces the paperwork is the fastest part.
- ✦Alberta: no waiting period, so you can marry the day your licence is issued. You both apply in person at a registry agent, and it's valid for 3 months.
- ✦British Columbia: no waiting period. Buy the licence within the 3 months before your wedding. It costs $100.
- ✦Manitoba: buy it at least 24 hours before the ceremony. Both of you must be there, and it's valid for 3 months.
- ✦Ontario: applying online needs at least 1 business day before the wedding, and if you need a licence within 24 hours, Ontario says to contact your municipality directly. It's valid for 3 months. Our Ontario marriage licence guide has the details.
- ✦Nova Scotia: valid for 3 months. For a civil ceremony, the province's court services page says the licence must reach your officiant at least three days before.
- ✦Québec: there's no licence. Instead, your officiant publishes a notice for 20 days before the wedding, and the province suggests filing several weeks ahead. A dispensation is possible only for serious reasons, case by case. Read our guide to getting married in Quebec before you set a date.
Book in the right order

When time is short, the order matters more than usual:
- ✦First: your venue (or ceremony spot) and your officiant. Nothing is legal or real until these two are set.
- ✦Second: your photographer, since the ones you love tend to book up early.
- ✦Third: food. Venues that include catering, tables and setup save you a whole round of bookings.
- ✦Then: attire, flowers, music and the rest. Simple is beautiful.
Send digital invitations as soon as the venue is confirmed, and keep the guest list tight so every decision stays quick.
Check the Open Dates Report
The Open Dates Report counts open wedding dates from businesses' live calendars on OpenDates, totalled by weekday, province and month. It's recounted every day, so it's a quick way to see which months and days have the most room before you start messaging.
A simple 12 week plan

- ✦Week 1: agree on your budget and rough guest count, and start your open dates search.
- ✦Weeks 1 to 2: book your venue and officiant. In Québec, ask your officiant about the 20 day notice right away.
- ✦Weeks 2 to 4: book your photographer and food, and send invitations.
- ✦Weeks 4 to 8: attire, flowers, music, rings.
- ✦Within 3 months of the date: get your licence, timed to your province's rules.
- ✦Final week: confirm every booking, your two witnesses and your ID.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really plan a wedding in three months?
Yes. Start with businesses that already have open dates, stay flexible on the day of the week, and keep the plan simple. The licence is quick in most provinces.
What is the fastest way to get married in Canada?
Alberta and British Columbia have no waiting period once you have your licence. Manitoba asks for 24 hours, Ontario's online route needs 1 business day, and Québec needs a 20 day notice.
Are Fridays and Sundays easier to book at short notice?
They give you far more to choose from. On OpenDates in late October 2026, Fridays and Sundays each had nearly as many open dates in the next three months as Saturdays, so being open to all three roughly triples your options.
You've got this
A short timeline has a lovely way of cutting out the noise. You decide faster, you fuss less, and you get to the good part sooner. On OpenDates you can see who's free on your date before you write to anyone. It is free for couples, always.
Rules and fees can change. Please confirm the details with your province and your officiant before you set your date.
Happy planning! Kristina
