Some of the loveliest weddings are the small ones, held in rooms that already carry a sense of history. A marble fireplace, a bay window and a grand staircase can make an intimate gathering feel quietly special.
YWCA Durham rents spaces in the heart of Oshawa, including rooms inside historic Adelaide House on McGrigor Street, built by Samuel McLaughlin. Renting these rooms also contributes much-needed revenue to the YWCA's essential services.
The Drawing Room, the most popular room for baby and bridal showers, is also well suited to small weddings. It features a hand-detailed marble fireplace, a large bay window overlooking a courtyard, hardwood floors, crown moulding, a period chandelier and air conditioning, and seats up to approximately 50 guests at tables or 64 in theatre style.
Next door, the Oak Room offers wall-to-wall windows, dark oak panelling and a decorative plaster ceiling. It seats around 25 to 30 guests and works well as an overflow space or dining room, and the YWCA recommends booking both rooms together for small weddings.
Near the front entrance, a grand wrought iron staircase surrounded by period craftsmanship is a popular photography setting, and its use is included with a Drawing Room or Oak Room rental.
Couples bring in the caterer of their choice, and alcohol can be served with the proper permit and insurance, with guidance available from the team. Free parking, free WiFi and table linens are included, and bookings need at least two weeks' notice.
For couples who want a small, meaningful wedding in a historic Oshawa mansion while supporting a community organization, YWCA Durham offers an elegant setting with real character.
