A wedding at True Wild Distilling in Calgary happens beneath grand chandeliers in a restored 1911 power substation, with copper stills gleaming below.
Completed in 1911, the all concrete building was the first substation for Calgary Power and supplied electricity to the growing city. Its restoration kept the art deco character, including a cast-iron spiral staircase that once led to the control room and an original crane, now set against charred wood walls and brass distilling equipment.
The Private Dining Room on the second floor overlooks the working distillery. Soaring ceilings, an art deco bar and chandeliers about ten feet tall set the mood, with room for 80 seated or 90 standing, and it is named for weddings.
A covered patio with heaters, fire pits and string lights holds up to 50 guests and makes a lovely spot for a cocktail hour before dinner upstairs. The semi-private mezzanine above the main dining room suits smaller gatherings of about 20 to 25. A full venue buyout welcomes up to 160 guests.
Menus are seasonal and served family style, made with ingredients from local ranchers and producers, and the bar pours spirits distilled on site. Guided distillery tours and tastings are available for every group size.
The distillery is just minutes from downtown and the Stampede grounds, with an event coordinator to help plan the day.
For couples who picture chandeliers, string lights on the patio and a toast with spirits made right in the room, True Wild Distilling offers a wedding that feels rich with Calgary history.
