Few wedding receptions come with vintage aircraft as the backdrop. At The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary, couples can dine and dance among the planes.
The museum's home was built in 1941 as the drill hall for #37 Secondary Flight Training School, part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Its original ceiling of hardwood beams remains an architectural focal point and a beautiful backdrop for photographs.
Wedding ceremonies can be held in the Main Hangar all year round, with up to approximately 200 chairs set up for a ceremony. The Main Hangar has audio-visual equipment and a maximum capacity of 400 people.
For receptions, the museum can host up to approximately 150 guests for a seated dinner or around 350 for a cocktail reception, suiting anything from a small, intimate gathering to a mid-sized celebration.
The Lancaster Room can be used for a buffet or by caterers as a prep area for a plated dinner, while the Memorial Room works well as a prep or break-out space.
Couples can use their own caterer or choose from the museum's list of preferred caterers, and may supply their own liquor provided AGLC rules are followed. Tables and chairs are included in the basic rental, and Wi-Fi is available.
With aircraft in the collection dating from 1909 to the 1980s, the museum is a classic setting for period-style portraits, and photography sessions can be booked during public hours or privately after hours.
For couples who love a sense of adventure and a story behind their setting, The Hangar Flight Museum offers a ceremony and reception that feel truly one of a kind.
