Some of the best celebrations happen just outside the city, where there is room to breathe, trees on the horizon and space for everyone to gather.
The New Maryland Centre, owned by the Village of New Maryland, sits minutes from uptown Fredericton and about 4 km from Exit 285A of the Trans-Canada Highway. The building is set in secluded, natural surroundings, with a playground, a picnic area and three forested walking trails behind the centre.
Couples who want to say their vows outdoors can hold their ceremony on the side lawn and garden, then move inside for the reception.
The large multi-use hall can be divided into Hall A and Hall B, each with a separate entrance, or used together. Combined, the halls hold up to 300 standing guests or up to 184 seated at tables, with numbers varying depending on the stage, dance floor and buffet. For traditional receptions with a head table, the centre recommends no more than 120 guests.
Wedding rentals include Halls A and B and the kitchen for a full day from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Staff set up and take down tables and chairs, and the rental includes two portable stages, microphones, a screen and a sound system with ceiling speakers. The kitchen comes with appliances, dishes, cutlery and coffee and tea urns.
Couples bring in the caterer of their choice, since the centre does not provide catering for receptions. Bar service is complimentary and is provided by the New Maryland Lions Club.
The hall can also be booked the evening before for decorating or a rehearsal, and next-morning clean-up is available for Saturday weddings, which takes some pressure off the day itself.
The building is barrier-free, with modern washrooms, a large visitor reception area and ample free parking.
For couples who want a welcoming community hall with a garden ceremony option, room for dancing and the freedom to plan the celebration their own way, the New Maryland Centre offers a relaxed setting just beyond Fredericton.
