Highland Village Museum

Highland Village gives couples the chance to marry inside a genuine piece of Cape Breton history.

At Baile nan Gàidheal in Iona, the historic Malagawatch Church stands above a landscape overlooking the Bras d’Or Lake. The church can accommodate up to approximately 210 people, making it large enough for a substantial ceremony while still retaining the intimacy and quiet character of an old wooden place of worship.

The surrounding Highland Village adds another layer to the day. Period buildings representing generations of Gaelic settlement stretch across the grounds, creating distinctive places for wedding photographs before or after the vows.

There is something deeply romantic about stepping inside a church that has already stood through so many chapters of Cape Breton life. The wooden interior, history and landscape do not compete with the ceremony. They simply hold it.

Afterwards, couples can step outside to the hillside and lake views, where the scenery seems to make the moment feel even larger.
