A wedding at the Friedensfeld Community Centre feels like a celebration in a hall that neighbours built with their own hands, with a hardwood dance floor waiting for the first dance.
The centre stands in the countryside near Sarto, a short drive south and east of Steinbach. Its roots go back to the Friedensfeld School of 1916, where local families once cooked and served wedding banquets themselves. The community club formed in 1967, and in 1970 volunteers raised the present hall in roughly two months; more than 800 people came to the grand opening.
The main hall measures 70 by 72 feet, with hardwood floors throughout, a stage, a large dance floor with good lighting and a strong sound system. It holds up to 400 guests, and its liquor licence covers the same number. A large coat check and a paved parking lot make arrivals easy, and bartenders and security can be arranged on request.
The centre offers its own catering menu with a wide range of meal choices, and dishes that are not listed can be requested.
For smaller gatherings of up to 70 people, the separate Clubhouse has open floor space, a roomy kitchen and new air conditioning. Outside, the park has sheltered picnic areas, fire pits, a play structure and ball diamonds for relaxed daytime get-togethers.
For couples who picture a big, warm prairie reception with family on the dance floor until late, the Friedensfeld Community Centre offers a generous hall with a proud local story behind it.
