The Pendennis is for couples who want their wedding venue to have a story long before their own celebration begins.
Standing on Jasper Avenue overlooking Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River Valley, this remarkable historic building began life as a hotel more than a century ago. Today, its old brick, enormous windows, hidden corners and beautifully restored spaces have been given an entirely new chapter as one of the city's most distinctive wedding venues.
Rather than asking the entire celebration to stay inside one ballroom, The Pendennis gives couples different spaces to discover as the day unfolds.
The third-floor Ballroom is the heart of larger celebrations, seating up to 140 guests for dinner. Natural light pours through the building's large windows during the day, while historic brick and warm architectural details give the room an atmosphere that becomes even more romantic once evening arrives.
Nearby, the Cocktail Bar offers something wonderfully intimate for gatherings of around 20 to 75 guests. Upstairs, the fourth floor opens another collection of possibilities, with space for up to 140 seated guests and access to one of the building's most memorable features: its outdoor balcony overlooking the city and river valley.
The balcony can welcome everything from a small gathering to a much larger cocktail hour, giving guests somewhere to step outside, raise a glass and watch Edmonton stretch away beneath them. It is easy to imagine slipping out there together for a few quiet minutes while the celebration continues inside.
Food has become part of The Pendennis story too. Its dedicated in-house catering team, The Culinary Architects, is led by Red Seal Chef Tamara Solon and creates everything from plated dinners to cocktail receptions and interactive culinary experiences. A venue coordinator is included with current wedding offerings, with additional planning support available for couples who want someone beside them through even more of the process.
But perhaps what makes The Pendennis most romantic is the feeling of moving through it.
The morning begins in one corner of the building. Guests arrive and discover another. The ceremony gives way to cocktails, doors open onto the balcony and eventually everyone finds their seats for dinner.
Then Edmonton begins to glow outside the windows.
Speeches become music. The old brick walls catch the softer evening light. People wander between floors and onto the balcony, and somewhere along the way a building that has stood here for more than a century becomes completely wrapped up in one very new story.
