Lune 1860 feels less like arriving at a wedding venue and more like being let in on a beautiful secret.
At the end of a tree-canopied drive in the countryside near Goderich sits an Italianate villa built in 1860, surrounded by 88 acres of wildflowers, grassy fields and century-old trees. Its exterior was modelled after Osborne House, the summer residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and for generations its grand rooms were used for both family life and elaborate gatherings.
More than 160 years later, people are gathering here again.
Today, Lune is intentionally intimate, welcoming weddings of up to 100 guests and dividing the property into eight distinct spaces inspired by the phases of the moon. Rather than spending the entire wedding in one room, couples can let the day unfold across the estate, with each part of the celebration taking on a mood of its own.
Outside, The Garden feels wonderfully untamed. Wildflowers, grassy fields, stone paths, a pond and pergola sit beneath old maples and evergreens, creating a ceremony setting where nature has been allowed to remain a little wild around the edges.
Then there is The Fountain, a historic Italianate-inspired centrepiece at the end of the avenue, surrounded by gardens and towering pines.
Inside the old house, the atmosphere changes completely.
The Light Room is washed in natural daylight, with two grand salons connected by sweeping arches and twin fireplaces framed in original Italian marble dating to 1860. Across the house, the Dark Room becomes its moodier counterpart, wrapped in deep frescoed walls with a dramatic gilded mirror and another fireplace made from 19th-century Italian black marble.
Between them sits The Arc, where a moon pendant seems to float beneath a hand-sculpted ceiling, creating an intimate little world for candlelit gatherings.
Even dinner can have its own room. The Table looks through rows of French windows toward the gardens, while outside, the Garden Terrace takes inspiration from Spain and Italy with sun-warmed stone, iron furnishings and a secluded Mediterranean feeling beneath the trees.
And then there is The Loft.
This 2,000-square-foot standalone space began life as a barn but has been completely reimagined through the language of cathedrals and monastic architecture. Six soaring floor-to-ceiling cathedral windows draw light across marble flagstone floors, while sweeping arches, prismatic glass and a stone-inspired bar give celebrations of up to 100 guests a setting unlike almost anything else in Ontario.
Its enormous doors can open toward the surrounding countryside.
And that matters at Lune.
Because eventually the architecture gives way to the landscape.
The ceremony is over. Everyone has eaten. The afternoon begins slipping toward one of Huron County's extraordinary sunsets and warm light starts moving through the trees and across the fields.
Later still, the stars appear.
The rooms glow behind you. Candles flicker across the tables and the property that felt beautiful when everyone arrived now feels completely different because it holds your people, your flowers, your music and all the little moments nobody could have planned.
Perhaps that is what Lune does particularly well.
It gives every part of a wedding its own atmosphere.
