Hawood Inn feels like the kind of wedding where everyone packs a bag, drives into Prince Albert National Park and forgets about ordinary life for a little while.
Set in the heart of Waskesiu and directly across from the lake and main beach, this family-owned inn has been welcoming guests since 1988. Boreal forest surrounds the town, Waskesiu Lake waits across the road and everything from the wedding dinner to the following morning can become part of one wonderfully Saskatchewan getaway.
For the celebration itself, Kingsmere Hall brings the warmth couples hope to find in a northern lodge. A soaring ceiling rises above the room while a fieldstone fireplace gives it a beautiful focal point for weddings of up to 100 guests. It feels particularly fitting for a celebration here: rustic, warm and connected to the landscape waiting outside.
Smaller weddings have their own place too. The naturally lit Spruce River Room can welcome up to 60 guests at round tables, allowing dinner and speeches to feel wonderfully close and personal rather than like a scaled-down version of a ballroom wedding.
Food is prepared by Hawood's own catering team, with menus built around fresh cooking and locally sourced ingredients. Saskatchewan pickerel has been part of the restaurant's story since the Inn opened, and catering can be tailored around the needs and tastes of each gathering.
Then there is everything that happens around the wedding.
Hawood has 34 guest rooms and seven suites, allowing family and friends to stay together right in Waskesiu. Lakefront rooms open onto balconies facing the water, larger suites offer kitchens and fireplaces, and there is even a honeymoon suite with its own lake-facing deck and jet tub overlooking the water.
Up on the rooftop, reservation-only hot tubs and fire tables offer another little place to gather. It is easy to imagine friends meeting there the evening before, or the newlyweds finally finding a quiet moment together once the excitement of the weekend begins to settle.
And outside the Inn is an entire national park.
Summer can mean mornings by the beach, walks through the boreal forest, golf and days on the lake. When snow arrives, skis and snowshoes are available from the Inn and the landscape becomes something entirely different.
That is perhaps what makes a wedding at Hawood feel so special. It does not have to begin when the ceremony starts or disappear when the last song ends.
Guests arrive in Waskesiu. Bags are carried upstairs. Familiar faces begin appearing around the Inn. Somewhere between dinner overlooking the lake, photographs beneath those enormous Saskatchewan skies and everyone gathering beside the fireplace, the wedding becomes an entire little escape.
Then morning arrives over Waskesiu Lake.
You wake up in the national park, the people you love are still nearby and for the first time, you get to look out toward the water as a married couple.
