Fredericton Botanic Garden

Some wedding settings need arches, draping and elaborate décor before they begin to feel romantic. Fredericton Botanic Garden already has something much harder to create: a landscape that changes with the seasons and has been growing for decades.

Tucked beside Odell Park in Fredericton, the garden covers approximately 53 acres filled with cultivated gardens, mature plantings, ponds, woodland trails and views across the Saint John River. It began in 1990 and has continued to grow through the work of the Fredericton Botanic Garden Association, its volunteers and the wider community. Today, couples can reserve areas of the garden specifically for wedding ceremonies and photography.

That makes this a particularly lovely choice for couples who picture the ceremony itself happening somewhere alive with colour.

Instead of walking toward rows of chairs inside a traditional hall, imagine making your way through the garden with trees overhead, flowers around you and the person you are about to marry waiting in one of the quiet pockets of the property. Depending on the season, the surrounding landscape might be filled with flowering shrubs, perennials or the deeper shades of a garden beginning to turn toward autumn.

The garden includes a collection of distinct areas rather than one single formal backdrop. There are azalea and rhododendron gardens, a rock and crevice garden, pollinator plantings, the New Brunswick Literature Garden and the Wabanaki Healing Garden, along with ponds and trails winding through the property. That variety gives couples and photographers room to move away from the ceremony site and find different settings without leaving the garden.

And perhaps that is where a place like this becomes especially beautiful on a wedding day.

After the congratulations and hugs, you can step away from everyone for a little while and wander together through the grounds. One photograph might be surrounded by flowers, another beside the water, another beneath trees where the light filters softly through the branches. Fredericton Botanic Garden specifically welcomes wedding ceremonies and can help couples choose a location within the garden based on the setting and blooms they are hoping for. Limited vehicle access can also be arranged within the garden for the wedding party or guests with mobility needs, and the Resource Centre provides washroom facilities and somewhere to make those last little adjustments before the ceremony begins.

There is a small indoor gathering space in the Resource Centre for groups of no more than approximately 30 people, and the garden also notes that its greenhouse may be available for certain events. This is important to understand when imagining the day. Fredericton Botanic Garden is not a traditional large reception hall. Its real strength is the ceremony, the photographs and the feeling of being surrounded by nature while you say your vows.

You can make the garden the romantic beginning of the celebration, then continue the reception elsewhere in Fredericton. The ceremony gets to feel completely connected to the outdoors without requiring the entire wedding to happen in the same place.
