Fort Gibraltar

At Fort Gibraltar, a Winnipeg wedding can begin by going back two hundred years.

On the banks of the Red River in St. Boniface, only minutes from downtown, the reconstructed historic fort surrounds couples with timber walls, park-like grounds and the atmosphere of the fur-trade era.

It is wonderfully unlike a ballroom.

The ceremony can begin outside, with up to 200 guests gathering on the grounds beside the river.

There is space for a tented celebration too, allowing dinner and dancing to stay connected to the outdoors while the old fort rises around the party.

Or the vows can move inside.

The Great Hall can welcome up to 160 guests for a ceremony, its timber interior giving the moment a warmth and character that would be almost impossible to recreate with décor alone.

Later, up to 140 can sit down here for dinner.

Smaller celebrations can gather in the Partner's Room or Maison Chaboillez, where around 48 people can share a seated meal and the wedding immediately becomes more intimate.

But the real magic is the place itself.

Fort Gibraltar has been a gathering place since 1809.

Long before anyone arrived carrying bouquets or wedding cakes, people met here beside the Red River.
