There is something wonderfully romantic about inviting everyone you love away for the weekend and having an entire lake almost to yourselves.

Footprints Resort near Bancroft is designed for exactly that kind of wedding.

Normally an adults-only boutique retreat, the resort opens itself differently for exclusive wedding rentals, allowing couples to bring family and friends together for an intimate destination celebration without leaving Ontario.

And when a wedding takes over Footprints, it really does take over.

The entire resort can be reserved exclusively, meaning there are no unrelated guests wandering through the celebration and no second wedding happening somewhere down the hall.

The property sits on its own private lake, surrounded by forest and cottage-country landscape.

Couples can exchange vows on the deck overlooking the water, along the lawn or even near the long dock stretching into the lake.

Then everyone stays.

Nine rooms, seven villas and seven cabins provide overnight accommodation for up to approximately 56 people, creating the kind of wedding where guests are not simply invited for dinner.

They become part of the whole weekend.

Imagine the night before.

People arrive carrying bags instead of just gifts.

Someone finds the beach.

Others take kayaks onto the water.

Friends who have not seen one another in years begin catching up around the property before the wedding has even officially started.

Then morning arrives.

The lake is still.

Somewhere, somebody is already awake and nervous.

The ceremony happens beside the water.

Afterwards there are photographs along the shoreline and trails while guests settle into cocktails and the celebration moves toward the Dome, Cabana and lounge spaces.

Later, there can be a fire.

Stars.

People sitting outside long after the formal pieces of the wedding have ended.

And nobody needs to leave.

That is the real romance of Footprints.

It gives couples something wedding days rarely provide enough of.

Time.

Time with family.

Time with friends.

Time to wake up the next morning and realize everyone is still there.
