Château Ste-Agnès

Château Ste-Agnès feels like somebody quietly moved a piece of Europe into the Eastern Townships and waited for the vines to grow around it.

The Sutton estate dates to 1846 and stretches across 173 acres beneath the Appalachian Mountains, with terraced vineyards, gardens, ponds, stone architecture and a château rising from the landscape.

Couples can begin the day in villas and suites on the property, turning wedding morning into part of the escape rather than a commute toward it.

Then comes the ceremony.

It can happen outside among lawns and vineyards with the mountains beyond, or inside the Romanesque stone chapel, where up to 60 guests can gather for something wonderfully intimate.

The chapel alone would be enough to make this property unusual.

But the wedding keeps unfolding.

Cocktails can move onto terraces overlooking gardens and vines while the couple disappears through the estate for photographs. Guests are free to wander the grounds, giving that in-between hour the feeling of exploring somewhere rather than simply waiting for dinner.

Its ballroom seats up to 120 guests beneath cathedral ceilings and vintage crystal chandeliers.

Stone, antiques and old-world architecture bring drama to the room before the first centrepiece reaches the table.

For larger or more open-air celebrations, the estate also allows outdoor dining and a designated area for a marquee.

There are almost too many beautiful places here for one wedding.

Which may be why staying on the estate makes so much sense.

The vines do not disappear when the reception ends.

The château is still there in the morning.
