Auberge Abbaye d'Oka

Some wedding venues have history added to them.

At the Abbaye d'Oka, history surrounds you before the wedding has even begun.

Founded by Cistercian monks in 1881, the heritage monastery rises from the landscape in Oka with the kind of architecture that makes arriving there feel less like checking into a venue and more like entering somewhere from another time.

Inside are six reception rooms, each carrying pieces of the monastery's past. Beyond them are an interior courtyard, the church forecourt and a terrace overlooking the surrounding land, giving couples the possibility of allowing the wedding to move through different parts of the Abbaye as the day unfolds.

The old monastery spaces were created for gathering long before they became wedding rooms. That history is still visible in the architecture, the high ceilings, the old woodwork and the stained glass found throughout the property.

There is something incredibly romantic about celebrating a new marriage in a place that has stood quietly through generations.

The ceremony can feel almost still. Guests can gather in the courtyard or move through the old halls. Dinner can unfold inside one of the historic rooms before evening settles across the monastery.

And when the celebration finally winds down, it does not necessarily have to end with everyone driving away.

The Auberge inside the Abbaye has approximately 50 rooms, allowing guests to remain within the monastery overnight. For couples bringing together family and friends from different places, that can turn the wedding into something larger than a few hours.

People wake up in the same place the next morning.

They talk about the speeches over breakfast. Someone is still laughing about the dance floor. Flowers from the night before are probably still sitting somewhere upstairs.

And for just a little longer, everyone remains inside the world the couple created for their wedding.

At Abbaye d'Oka, the setting is grand, but the most beautiful part may be how much time it gives people simply to be together.
