Shawnessy Barn (Shawnessy Community Centre Association)

At the Shawnessy Barn, a wedding gathers around a big stone fireplace inside a historic barn, with glass doors opening to a sunny patio and open parkland.

Built in 1915 and restored in the late 1970s as a community centre, the barn is a Calgary landmark and the last usable barn left within the city limits. It stands in the Shawnessy community in south Calgary, surrounded by 17 acres of green space.

Inside, warm cedar walls frame the stone fireplace, which glows on winter evenings and adds charm in summer. Wide sliding glass doors let the party flow outside onto the patio and lawns.

The main floor seats up to 115 guests, and the rental also includes exclusive use of the lower level, where a kitchen is available for caterers to heat and serve. Tables and chairs are provided.

Couples can bring their own food, host a potluck or choose any caterer they like, and the barn can share a list of caterers recommended by past couples. Bar service comes with ProServe-certified bartenders, with couples supplying the alcohol.

Several hotels sit within five kilometres of the barn for out-of-town guests.
