Some places carry their history quietly, in original beams, historic housebarns and a single village street settled more than a century ago.
Neubergthal was established on the Manitoba prairies in the 1870s by Mennonite immigrants and is one of the only remaining Mennonite single-street villages in the province with original housebarns. Parks Canada has designated it a national historic site, and the Neubergthal Heritage Foundation welcomes private events within it, near Altona.
At the centre of wedding celebrations is the Commons Barn, a fully renovated building over 140 years old with original beams and customizable lighting. It has an occupancy of 222 and seats up to approximately 180 guests, with climate control, accessible washrooms and audio visual access.
The attached Klippenstein House offers access to a commercial kitchen, along with a warm, intimate main floor featuring restored Mennonite floor painting, antique furniture and historic photographs.
Across from the barn, the Bergthal School is a renovated historic schoolhouse with oversized original windows. It suits intimate weddings of up to around 50 seated guests and is often used as a bridal preparation space when rented alongside the Commons Barn.
The H. F. Hamm House is an open-air historic structure that offers shelter from rain and wind, with original window coverings that open to the surrounding views. It can be used for small ceremonies, meals and photographs.
The village grounds add mature trees, wide open spaces and fire pits, with the convenience of indoor amenities close by. Alcohol is permitted in the barn and on the grounds with an approved permit.
To begin, couples fill out a rental inquiry and the foundation's events coordinator gets in touch to help plan the day.
For couples who want a wedding rooted in prairie heritage, with a rustic barn reception and a village setting that feels like stepping back in time, Neubergthal Commons offers a celebration with real history in every beam.
