At Honsberger Estate Winery, couples exchange vows under a raised wooden pergola while their guests look on from white-washed church pews dating to the 1800s.
The estate is a working fruit farm in Jordan, in Niagara, where the Honsberger family has farmed for six generations since 1811. In 2007 the family replaced cherry and apple trees with Cabernet Franc and Riesling vines, and since 2012 it has made its own wine, sold only at the farm.
The ceremony site sits among greenery just steps from the reception, and a private suite tucked behind a living wall gives the couple a place to get ready from early afternoon. The grounds open for photos before the property becomes theirs alone for the evening.
Receptions are held in the Big Barn, built around 1833, with high ceilings, wooden beams, gold Chiavari chairs, wood harvest tables, fine china and Riedel stemware. A covered canopy beside a garden terrace and open lawns among the vineyards offer more settings.
The culinary team builds a custom four course plated dinner using produce and proteins from farmers within 20 kilometres. A cocktail hour with passed canapés follows the ceremony, a seven-hour bar is included, and estate wine can be set aside ahead of time. Late at night, a wood-fired oven can turn out pizzas in front of guests.
Couples also get a tasting night to sample popular dishes and a complimentary wine tasting to pair wines with their menu. An on-site consultant who has guided more than 250 vineyard weddings helps from the first tour to the aisle.
Full packages run from May to October, with intimate packages for 50 to 80 guests and micro weddings for smaller groups. Guests can stay on the farm in renovated two-bedroom cottages.
For couples who picture vineyard rows, a historic barn and a farm-to-table feast, Honsberger Estate Winery offers a wedding rooted in two centuries of family farming.
