There is something quietly moving about marrying in a schoolhouse that has been welcoming people since 1848, with light falling through Gothic-style windows onto exposed beams overhead.
Enoch Turner Schoolhouse in Toronto's Corktown neighbourhood is the oldest school still standing in the city and was its first free school. Owned by the Ontario Heritage Trust, the restored Gothic Revival brick building is now a public museum as well as a venue for weddings and special events.
The West Hall, the largest space at roughly 48 by 48 feet, can accommodate up to approximately 150 guests. The venue's main hall has high ceilings and abundant natural light, adapting easily to a seated dinner or a lively cocktail reception, and a baby grand piano sits on site.
Many couples hold their ceremony in the Schoolroom, set up a bar in the Salon and then move into the West Hall for the reception, so the whole celebration unfolds under one historic roof.
Catering, event coordination and rentals are handled by the venue's preferred caterers. Couples can stock the bar themselves, with no corkage fees, no cake cutting fees and no landmark fees.
Couples have exclusive use of the venue, a senior Site Host and Event Coordinator, 14 rectangular tables with a choice of chairs, heat, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Professionally installed string lights, an in-house sound system and DJ service are available, along with optional set-up days.
Inside and out, the Schoolhouse lends itself to photographs, from beams and brick walls to the flowerbeds and the small park just outside. The site is fully wheelchair accessible and easily reached by streetcar.
