Clonmel Castle

Some places feel as though they have been waiting a century for a wedding. Clonmel Castle, perched above the Lynn River in Port Dover, is one of them.

The castle was built by Dr. William Henry "Harry" Barrett, a veterinarian and farmer, on Prospect Hill. Its name comes from Cluain Meala, or Honey Meadow, a nod to his Irish heritage in County Tipperary, and its architecture blends Colonial Revival, Georgian, Victorian, Tudor, Edwardian and Neo-Gothic styles.

Today the historic 1920s estate in Port Dover is a luxury bed and breakfast and a setting for intimate celebrations. A hand-crafted stone wall built from Hagersville quarry stone is one of its most distinctive features.

Couples can exchange vows in the conservatory, an intimate, light-filled space where greenery, glass and heritage architecture come together. Outside, a rounded stone doorway softened by cascading ivy feels like an entrance to another century.

The castle also invites a little playfulness. A bridal party might raise swords and declare the start of a legendary love story before heading back inside to celebrate.
