The Spice Factory feels like Hamilton doing weddings its own way.
Set inside a character-filled building on Hughson Street North, this downtown venue trades the traditional ballroom for exposed brick, hardwood floors, an original tin ceiling, enormous windows and three floors that couples get to make their own. Only one wedding takes place here at a time, giving you exclusive use of the entire building for the day.
And what a building it is to wander through.
The Cilantro Room brings together warm brick, hardwood and streams of natural light, opening directly onto a large enclosed patio with two fire pits. Upstairs, the Black Pepper Studio can transform from an intimate ceremony setting into dinner or a dance floor later in the evening, while the light-filled Mustard Seed Loft offers another beautiful possibility for saying “I do.”
Having so many spaces means the wedding can actually move.
Guests can watch you exchange vows in one room, wander somewhere completely different for cocktails and then discover another space waiting for dinner and dancing. Instead of spending the entire celebration around the same tables, each part of the day gets its own little beginning.
There are thoughtful spaces for the hours before the ceremony too. The Sage Suite is filled with large windows and warm exposed brick, giving one wedding party somewhere to get ready from the morning onward, while the separate Nutmeg Nook provides another preparation space.
Then there is the patio.
When the evening cools, guests can slip outside, gather around the fire pits and catch up beneath the Hamilton sky before somebody inevitably hears their favourite song and disappears back inside.
Food and drinks are part of the experience too. The Spice Factory offers both plated and cocktail-style receptions through its own kitchen and bar, while many of the practical pieces couples normally have to source separately, from ceremony arbours and linens to chairs, lounge furniture and audiovisual equipment, are already available here.
But perhaps the best thing about having three floors entirely to yourselves is what happens once everyone arrives.
The windows catch the afternoon light. The ceremony room fills with people trying not to cry. Somewhere else in the building, cocktails are waiting. Hours later, dinner is finished, the patio fires are glowing and the beautifully arranged wedding has become wonderfully less orderly because everyone has found the dance floor.
Tomorrow, it will be The Spice Factory again.
But for one day, the entire building belongs to your story.
