The Gardens at Pillar and Post feel a little like someone took a painting and decided couples should be allowed to get married inside it.
Inspired by Monet's gardens at Giverny, this remarkable corner of Niagara-on-the-Lake unfolds through flowers, winding pathways, water and an iconic green bridge, creating a wedding setting that feels worlds away from an ordinary hotel garden.
And couples have more than one beautiful place to say “I do.”
La Roserie wraps the ceremony in the romance of a rose garden. Pont de Monet brings couples closer to one of the property's most recognizable views, where the green bridge, water and waterfall create a scene that feels almost impossibly suited to wedding photographs. Le Petit Pavilion offers another garden setting near the pond, bridge and falls.
Each has its own personality, but all three share the same wonderful feeling: the landscape is doing much of the decorating for you.
Imagine guests arriving through the gardens while everything is still beautifully untouched. The seats begin to fill. Somewhere nearby, water is moving and flowers are blooming. Then the music changes and the person everyone has been waiting for appears along the path.
For a few minutes, it feels as though the entire garden has been leading toward that one walk.
After the ceremony, there is no need to immediately leave this little world behind. The Gardens themselves become part of the photographs, with paths to wander, flowers surrounding you and that unmistakable green bridge waiting for the newlyweds to cross together.
Then the celebration can move indoors.
Upper Canada Hall welcomes weddings of up to 168 guests beneath warm wood beams, with a private deck and gazebo giving everyone somewhere to step outside again once evening arrives.
For something smaller, the Olde Library can welcome up to 80 guests surrounded by floor-to-ceiling woodwork and the warmth of a fireplace. The bright Gallery provides an indoor ceremony option for up to 100, while the intimate Secord Room gathers up to 24 around beautiful woodwork and its own gas fireplace.
There is even The Barn, tucked within The Gardens themselves. With exposed wooden beams, abundant natural light, large windows overlooking the surrounding landscape and room for up to 74, it gives smaller receptions a wonderfully different way to remain close to the gardens after the vows are finished.
Food is created by Pillar and Post's own culinary team, with custom wedding menus designed around the celebration. Flowers can become part of the experience too, with Clippings Floral Design, the hotel's in-house floral studio, creating everything from bouquets and centrepieces to ceremony décor.
But it is difficult to imagine anything competing with the gardens themselves.
As afternoon becomes evening, the light changes across the water. Guests disappear along the paths for photographs. Dinner begins inside while the gardens grow quieter beyond the windows.
And sometime during the day, the green bridge stops being simply the bridge you saw when you first toured the venue.
It becomes the place you walked across in your wedding clothes.
The rose garden becomes where your family watched you make a promise.
The waterfall becomes the sound behind photographs you will keep for the rest of your lives.
Monet may have inspired the gardens.
But on your wedding day, the story painted into them is entirely your own.
