Signal Hill National Historic Site

There are few places in St. John's where a wedding can feel quite as unmistakably Newfoundland as Signal Hill.

High above the harbour, with the Atlantic stretching out beyond the cliffs and the colourful city gathered below, Signal Hill National Historic Site gives couples a setting where history and landscape seem to meet in every direction.

Parks Canada specifically welcomes weddings here through its special-event permit system and currently offers three reservable event spaces at Signal Hill.

The field sits within the historic landscape of Signal Hill, with open sky, rugged surroundings and views that immediately tell guests where they are. There are two areas available, including a smaller upper field suited to more intimate gatherings and a larger main field for bigger occasions.

Then there is the Signal Room.

Located beside the Visitor Centre, this indoor space looks toward Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and St. John's Harbour. It can accommodate up to 60 guests seated at tables, 80 in an auditorium arrangement or approximately 100 standing. A small outdoor deck adds somewhere to step outside and take in the view.

That combination creates a lovely possibility for couples who want the beauty of Newfoundland outdoors without relying entirely on Newfoundland weather.

Because here, weather is part of the personality.

Fog can roll in.

Wind can move across the hill.

The Atlantic can look calm one moment and wonderfully dramatic the next.

Rather than taking away from the setting, it becomes part of the story.

Signal Hill also carries centuries of history. The hill played an important role in the defence of St. John's, Cabot Tower has stood at the summit since the turn of the twentieth century, and this is where Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901.
