Manoir Sweetsburg feels made for the kind of wedding where almost everyone stays close enough to hear every word of the speeches.

Built around 1875 in Cowansville, this Victorian manor brings more than 150 years of character to an intimate celebration in the Eastern Townships. Today it is an eight-room inn, filled with individually styled bedrooms, elegant shared spaces and the unmistakable feeling of staying somewhere with a story.

Weddings here are beautifully small.

The manor's glassed-in reception room welcomes up to 50 seated guests, surrounding dinner with natural light rather than the scale of a traditional ballroom.

And fifty can be a wonderful number.

It means looking around the room and recognizing every face.

It means grandparents, childhood friends and the people who know the stories behind the speeches are never very far away.

Before dinner, the manor itself becomes part of the experience. Guests can settle into the lounge, wander through the old house and enjoy the slower rhythm of a wedding happening inside an inn rather than an enormous event complex.

Then there is everything waiting beyond the property.

Manoir Sweetsburg sits in the heart of the Eastern Townships on Québec's Wine Route, surrounded by the villages, vineyards and countryside that make this part of the province such a romantic place to disappear to for a weekend.

Dunham and Frelighsburg are nearby. So are Knowlton, Bromont and Sutton.

Suddenly, the wedding becomes an excuse for everyone to stay a little longer.

Then the actual celebration begins.

The sun-filled room changes as afternoon moves toward evening. Tables fill. Glasses are raised. Dinner becomes stories and the old manor begins collecting another set of memories within walls that have already seen generations come and go.

A wedding at Manoir Sweetsburg does not need hundreds of people or a ballroom stretching into the distance.

Its romance is much closer than that.

An old Victorian house.

A room filled with light.

The Eastern Townships outside.

And fifty people who mean enough to be there.
