Maison O'Brien feels like the kind of place a wedding party might disappear to for the weekend and briefly forget that Ottawa is only 20 kilometres away.

Perched above Meech Lake in Gatineau Park, this intimate heritage property began life in 1930 as Kincora Lodge, the summer home of businessman Ambrose O'Brien.

And it was never an ordinary country house.

Prominent Ottawa architect W.E. Noffke designed the home to sit within the landscape, with cedar shingles, local granite, terraces and windows looking out toward the lake and surrounding Gatineau Hills. Nearly a century later, the building is recognized for its heritage significance and has begun an entirely new chapter as an intimate boutique hotel.

Now, couples can write themselves into its story.

Maison O'Brien welcomes small weddings and offers the possibility of completely privatizing the property, turning the old lodge into a little world shared only with the people invited into it.

The scale is part of the romance.

Its bright private-event space can accommodate gatherings of up to 45 guests, surrounded by views toward Gatineau Park. Instead of hundreds of people spread across a ballroom, everyone can remain close enough to hear the laughter from the next table and see every expression during the speeches.

Food belongs to the landscape too.

Maison O'Brien creates customized menus built around local flavours and ingredients from the Outaouais, allowing dinner to feel connected to the place surrounding it rather than simply served inside it.

Then there is Adèle, the property's restaurant, with a panoramic terrace overlooking Meech Lake.

And upstairs are just 11 hotel rooms.

That small number changes the feeling completely.
