There is something almost impossibly romantic about the story behind Churchill House.
The grand home was built in Hantsport in 1860 by shipbuilder Ezra Churchill for his son John Wiley Churchill.
It was a wedding gift.
More than 160 years later, couples are still gathering inside it to celebrate marriages of their own.
Churchill House is one of those rare historic venues where many of the details that make the building extraordinary are not reproductions. Original craftsmanship remains throughout the home, including elaborate painted surfaces, fine woodwork, historic flooring, fireplaces and a sweeping staircase.
The result feels less like walking into an event hall and more like stepping into another era.
Weddings and receptions are specifically welcomed here, particularly for couples drawn to intimate celebrations.
The Music Room creates one particularly beautiful ceremony possibility. Original oak and mahogany flooring, elaborate painted details and an upper balcony give the room a wonderfully old-world character.
The Dining Room has an entirely different mood, with rich walls, historic Lincrusta wallcovering and large windows allowing natural light into the space.
Upstairs, preserved bedrooms once belonging to Violet and Laura Churchill can also become part of the wedding morning, giving couples somewhere filled with history to get ready before the ceremony begins.
That makes the hours before the vows feel rather special.
