Cellar 52

Long before anyone imagined wedding flowers hanging from its walls, the building now known as Cellar 52 was welcoming travellers into St. Jacobs.

Built in 1852 as one of the village's original stagecoach inns, it has spent more than a century and a half watching people arrive, gather and eventually continue on their way.

Today, couples arrive for an entirely different reason.

Cellar 52 has been transformed into an elegant wedding venue while keeping the character that makes an old building impossible to recreate. White walls, dark French-style windows, hardwood floors, fireplaces and crystal chandeliers give the interior a softness that feels both historic and modern.

And the whole wedding day can begin here.

Two private suites upstairs give couples and their favourite people somewhere to get ready, put on the dress, straighten a tie for the tenth time and enjoy those last few hours before everything becomes real.

Downstairs, ceremonies can take place indoors in front of a fireplace or outside beside the Conestogo River.

That riverside setting brings a different kind of quiet to the vows. Water moves nearby, the village sits just beyond and for a few minutes everyone is gathered around one moment.

Afterward, the celebration begins to spread through the property.

Cocktails can spill onto the patio beneath strings of lights. The Coach House Bar becomes a place for guests to gather. Dinner waits inside beneath the chandeliers. Later, a fire can become the backdrop for s'mores, conversations and those guests who need five minutes away from the dance floor before going straight back in.

And just outside the doors is St. Jacobs itself.

Couples can wander toward the bridge over the river or through the historic village for photographs, slipping briefly away from everyone before returning to the party.

There is even a five-room boutique hotel attached to the venue, allowing part of the wedding story to continue upstairs after the celebration winds down.

Cellar 52 is full of beautiful details, but perhaps its greatest charm is that the building already knows what it means to welcome people.

It has been doing it since 1852.

Now, instead of stagecoach travellers passing through, it gets to watch people arrive for one of the happiest days of their lives.
